Die Erfahrung einer Englischlehrerin in Korea: →
I was feeling sorry for myself because I’m sick - again - and so I went to buy choco pies and random snacks at the local Family Mart. A businessman studied me intently. I figured he took me for a “Russian” (prostitute) or was somehow internally mocking me. Or he was going to decide I was a free English lesson and ask me a rapid-fire series of intrusive questions, which sometimes amuses me and sometimes makes me want to gnaw off my leg.
Then he brushed my arm. “
You Letter and Sound hagwon teacher?”
“Yes.”
He took all my groceries.
“Let me pay.”
“What??!? Are you sure?”
“You teach my kids. It is my honor.”
Then he took me around the Family Mart and asked if there was anything else I wanted. (I did ask for some throat lozenges.)
I was stunned. I don’t think there’s ANY WAY that ever would have happened in America.
